Valencia: Green Capital of Europe 2024, a hub for new green spaces, Iberflora and Hábitat trade fairs

Valencia, the first Mediterranean city to earn the prestigious title of European Green Capital 2024, is being recognized for its outstanding achievements in sustainable tourism, climate neutrality, and a fair, inclusive green transition. This year, the city cements its position as a leader in environmental innovation, with major milestones including the new Parque Central, and hosting renowned events such as Iberflora and Feria Hábitat València trade fairs in early October.

Parque Central: A New Green Landmark

At the heart of the city’s new green transformation is Parque Central, a vast space spanning over 100,000 square meters between the neighbourhoods of Ruzafa and Malilla. Designed by American landscape architect Kathryn Gustafson, this urban park is a haven of greenery, offering a tranquil space for recreation, nature walks, and family activities. Inspired by the poem “Aigua plena de seny” by Ausiàs March, the park integrates lush vegetation, fountains, and historical railway structures, creating a blend of modernity and tradition. It is part of a larger initiative to enhance the quality of life for Valencia’s residents, 97% of whom live within 300 meters of a green urban area.

Iberflora and Feria Hábitat València: Showcasing Green Solutions

Valencia’s commitment to environmental leadership is also reflected in its role as the host of Iberflora, the International Fair for Plants and Flowers, Landscaping, Technology, and DIY Gardening. The 53rd edition of Iberflora concluded with great success, drawing international visitors and offering key industry insights. The City Council of Valencia collaborated with the event to host “Days on Landscaping and Gardening,” discussing vital topics such as sustainable tree management, soil improvement, and water conservation.

In conjunction with Iberflora, Feria Hábitat València brought together influential architects, interior designers, and buyers to explore innovative solutions in furniture, home textiles, kitchen design and of course outdoor furniture. These simultaneous events position Feria Valencia as an unprecedented hub for sustainable and creative industries in Europe.

A Vision for the Future

As Valencia continues to lead in green innovation, the city remains focused on tackling climate challenges and improving urban ecosystems. Conferences such as “The Trees We Need,” held during Iberflora, highlight the urgency of ecological coherence and the critical role of citizen participation in shaping the city’s future. Additionally, discussions emphasized the growing demand for native plants from southern Europe, driven by the effects of climate change.

Valencia’s journey as the European Green Capital 2024 is a testament to the city’s dedication to fostering a greener, more sustainable urban environment, reinforcing its role as a benchmark for cities across Europe and beyond.
